We coordinate multiple trips each year, both to mountains in Washington State and on extended field campaigns. There are also many other opportunities to participate in fieldwork with other UW groups.

In the News: Peering into snow

Civil and environmental engineering and A&A adjunct assistant professor David Shean has pioneered new techniques to measure changes in glaciers. He combined old spy satellite images and modern satellites to create time-lapse 3D maps as one method to study what has happened over the past 50 years. In 2014, he saw the potential of using drones to collect detailed, overlapping photos of glacier surfaces to map changes with accuracy of better than 1-2 inches.

In the News: A Mountain of Learning

There’s an ideal way to learn about retreating glaciers: visit them for the day. That’s exactly what a group of UW students did in September 2021, when they hiked up to one of Mount Baker’s most prominent glaciers, Easton Glacier, and learned how to gather highly precise data that can be used to track glacier change.
